As a part of the modernization scheme for the Irrigation Canal System of KRS Irrigation Project on Cauvery River. Karnataka Irrigation Department has constructed a link canal, taking off from Visweswarayya Main Canal before it enters the Hulikere Tunnel, and joining the Cauvery branch canal at its 28th KM near Peehalli in Mandya District. At the point of Confluence, there is difference in level of 8.3m between the bed levels of the link canal and the Branch Canal which is negotiated by construction of a canal drop structure, at the end of the link canal.

The Link canal MHS, utilizes the discharge of the Link canal and the drop available, for power generation. The Unit is operating since year 2002.

The Scheme involved Construction of:

1	A 70m long fully concrete lined approach channel having discharging capacity of 19.82 cumecs.
2	A concrete intake structure with stop log gates.
3	A Bye-pass arrangement structure just upstream of the intake structure with 3 Nos. 2m x 2.68m, Automatic falling shutter type gates.
4	A concrete structure surface power house 9.10m x 8.5m, to accommodate one vertical shaft full Kaplan turbine Generator, with tail race stop log gates
5	And a tail channel 70m long with a carrying capacity of 19.82 cumecs, to lead the tail water to the Cauvery branch canal. The one generating unit of 1500 KWs generates annually 10.1 GWhs.
